Nassau Travel Guide

Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital city and heart of the Bahamas. It is a gorgeous city, full of culture with exquisite beaches alongside many different attractions.

Not only is it paradise in itself, but it is also the transport hub of the island nation, with flights and ferries to the rest of the 700+ islands that make up the Bahamas.

Because there are no rideshare options in Nassau, your best bet is either taking a jitney bus or a taxi. Jitneys tend to be much cheaper but don’t run at night.

Another option to consider is hiring a car or a motorbike for more freedom in getting around. This can be done affordably for either one day or multiple.

Important Things To Know

Currency

Nassau used the Bahamian dollar (BSD). Most places will accept USD, but you might get your change in BSD. You’ll also be able to use your card at most establishments.

National Languages

The national language in the Bahamas is English, and Nassau is no exception. This makes it easy for tourists to communicate.

Time Zone

Nassau is in the UTC-5 time zone, but it does observe Daylight Savings Time. This means that from 12 March to 5 November, Nassau is actually in the UTC-4 zone as the clocks are put forward an hour.

Climate And Weather

In Nassau, the climate is generally divided into two main seasons because there are not really four distinct ones.

These two seasons are the hot season from May to October and the cooler season from November to April. The cooler season tends to be around 68 - 77°F, which is slightly cooler than the hot season, where temperatures average about 77 - 86°F. However, temperatures are pretty pleasant year-round.

The hot season is often rainy, whereas the cooler season tends to be drier. However, it is still balmy year-round in Nassau.

Another important thing to be aware of is that the Bahamas (and therefore Nassau) lies in the Atlantic hurricane belt. Hurricane season is from June to November.

When To Visit Nassau

We recommend visiting in the cooler season to avoid the stifling heat and to get more cool island breezes. This means you should visit between November and April for the best weather.

However, this is peak tourist season, so be ready to face the crowds. If you’re wanting to avoid the hustle and bustle, you need to look at off-peak times.

Because of the hurricane season, prices are much cheaper between June to November. For a less crowded trip, we recommend visiting the Bahamas in May.

  • Pirates of Nassau Museum: Learn about history in a fun and interactive way at this great destination. Discover fascinating stories about Nassau’s heyday and the pirates that traveled through the city’s ports. We especially love this for families with kids, but it’s a treat for adults too.
  • Food Tour: Being in the Caribbean, the food in Nassau is to die for. A walking food tour allows you to explore both the city and the cuisine. While this is quite touristy, we love getting to sample great food and see the highlights of the city.
  • Jaws Beach: See the beach where the cult classic movie sequel Jaws: The Revenge was filmed with your own eyes. Apart from the novelty factor, we can’t get enough of the white sand and crystal clear waters.
