Most Fuel Efficient SUVs and Trucks, According to Consumer Reports | EngineBiscuit

Fuel-efficient SUVs and trucks have been hard to come by for a long time, but that is starting to change. With the phenomenal growth of electric and hybrid vehicles, cars of all sizes can be fuel efficient. In some cases, they don’t use fuel at all. If a model you love doesn’t have an electric or hybrid variant yet, it probably will soon. It seems that automakers are announcing a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle every day. But which are the best? Here are the most fuel-efficient SUVs and trucks, according to Consumer Reports.

Small SUVs are a very popular category. With their low fuel consumption and spacious interior, they have become the perfect choice for a small family vehicle. The most fuel-efficient small SUV is an electric.

  • Tesla Model Y Long Range – Model Y Long Range gets 121 mpge. That’s way above the rest of the small SUV list provided by Consumer Reports. 127 mpge in the city and 114 on the highway make it the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class. If the Tesla Model Y Long Range is within your budget, it is the best fuel economy vehicle on the market of this size.
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium – The first electric vehicle entirely designed by Ford is a Mustang which is a small SUV. While it looks like the Mustang you’d expect from it, it seats five and offers more cargo space thanks to its spacious interior. The Mach-E Premium’s overall mpge is 90 with a single charge range of 230 miles.

For anyone who needs extra space for cargo, passengers or anything else, SUVs have been the answer for some time. Fuel efficiency has not been a selling point of these vehicles in the past, but it will continue to move forward.

  • Tesla Model X 100D – Big brother of the Model Y, the Model X can accommodate five, six or seven people, depending on your choice. Its fully electric motor gives it an overall mpge of 87.
  • Jaguar I-Pace HSE – This fully electric crossover SUV can accommodate five people and cover 234 miles on a single charge. The interior offers the comfort and technology you expect from a Jaguar. You can also increase the height of the vehicle if you have to cross difficult terrain. The I-Pace HSE is on average 76 on mpge.

MPVs also don’t have the strongest CV when it comes to fuel efficiency. The typical vehicle of big families, minivans in 2021 are actually really luxurious and practical. Add the fuel efficiency of these vehicles, and you have everything you need.

  • Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid – Model year 2021 adds the next-generation Uconnect infotainment system and a premium Pinnacle trim level. It can be purchased with seven or eight seats available and an overall average of 84 mpg.
  • Toyota Sienna XLE – Exclusively hybrid, the most recent Sienna has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with its electric drive giving it 245 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available as an option and is equipped with numerous safety features. The Sienna XLE has an overall average of 36 mpg.

Pickup trucks have never been fuel efficient. Although they are one of the most popular types of vehicles in America, they would be even more popular if fuel weren’t so expensive. Electric and hybrid trucks will burst onto the market during 2022, so it looks like 2021 will be the last time diesel shines.

  • Chevrolet Colorado LT Diesel – The all-new Chevrolet Colorado has responsive handling and multiple cabins and engine sizes. The diesel engine is a four cylinder and gets better gas mileage. The V6 engine manages 18 mpg in total, which is a bit worse than the four-cylinder diesel. The Chevrolet Colorado LT Diesel has an overall average of 24 mpg.
  • Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 Big Horn Diesel – Two trucks with identical total miles per gallon rank second on the fuel-efficient pickup list. The Silverado has a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine and the Ram 1500 has the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine. Both achieve an impressive 23 mpg overall.
  • Ford F-150 Hybrid – The Ford F-150 Hybrid is everything you would expect from a classic F-150, but more fuel efficient. The new PowerBoost hybrid gets 20 mpg total, and in the XLT 3.5-liter V6 Hybrid 4WD SuperCrew variant, still manages a towing capacity of 8,200.

The most fuel-efficient vehicles in each category are gaining more and more value. The more gas prices rise, the more people will want energy efficiency. SUVs and trucks have historically been terrible when it comes to gar mileage, but that is about to change. These are just a few of the vehicles that top Consumer Reports’ list of most fuel-efficient SUVs and trucks.
