Ecuador announces first humanitarian flight to repatriate citizens from Ukraine

Quito: Ecuador will carry out its first humanitarian flight from Poland on Monday for citizens who fled Ukraine amid escalating tensions with Russia, Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguin said.

The diplomat said on Saturday that the flight will be operated by Spanish or Polish airlines with a capacity of 350 people, a quota that should be met.

He said more than 150 Ecuadorians had crossed the Ukrainian border, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to Holguin, hundreds of Ecuadorians reside in Ukraine, most of whom are students. There are also a number of undocumented Ecuadorians living in the country, and the ministry has issued many of them with emergency passports.

“We estimate that with two flights, we will be able to bring all the Ecuadorians. The Air Force helped us coordinate the operation,” Holguin said.
