New York City and Cancun, Mexico remain the top destinations for Americans traveling away from home this Thanksgiving, according to Allianz Partners’ annual Top 10 Thanksgiving Destination Index.
The travel insurance company utilized over 800,000 insured travel itineraries taking place during the Thanksgiving holiday to make the list.
New York City remains the top domestic destination for holiday travelers. It has remained so for the past three years.
The other most popular domestic destinations include (in order), Seattle, Orlando, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Detroit.
International Thanksgiving vacation destinations are mostly warm-weather destinations, and the top three most popular are all located in Mexico. Excepting London and Paris, which are in fourth place and ninth place respectively, all of the others are located in Mexico or the Caribbean.
The most popular international destinations, in order, are Cancun, San Jose del Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, London, Montego Bay, Punta Cana, Nassau, Oranjestad, Paris and Providenciales.
“No matter where you’re headed this Thanksgiving, it’s important to keep in mind that this travel period is historically one of the busiest of the entire year for U.S. airports, and with increased numbers of travelers comes an increased possibility of travel delays,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA. “One of the best ways to successfully navigate significant delays this season is by purchasing a travel insurance policy with travel delay coverage which can help with a range of unpredicted costs from lost baggage to reimbursement for meals, accommodations and transportation incurred while delayed.”
