The Sea of Cortez' Claim to UNESCO Fame
4/9Within the Sea of Cortez lies Cabo Pulmo National Park, a 17,500-acre marine reserve that harbors 800 species of marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles, moray eels and a 20,000-year-old coral reef system (one of only three in North America). An extraordinary example of ecological recovery and biological diversity, the park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 and offers sanctuary for humans who want to escape to a quiet paradise. Commercial and sport fishing are banned within Cabo Pulmo, but the park rewards snorkelers and divers with beautiful clear waters where fish stream by in bands of vibrant color.
