In September, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced its new Global Entry Mobile App, and I used it for the first time this weekend.
If you thought using the Global Entry kiosk was quick, this is next-level.
I opened the app on the plane and took my picture (after a 12-plus-hour flight, it was not my finest) and then I opened the app once I was in the customs area and submitted my info.
After that, you check in with an officer and walk on through to baggage claim. If you haven't checked a bag, you are literally out of the airport in under 10 minutes.
In announcing the app, CBP said: "The new Global Entry mobile application leverages the latest technologies, in order to enhance security while further improving the travel experience for CBP’s trusted travelers,” said CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller.
Since many travelers can supply their passport info and use kiosks in the regular passport processing lines, I began to wonder if Global Entry was still going to be worth it when I needed to renew in a couple of years. My questions have been answered. This app is a must for frequent international flyers and well worth the Global Entry fee, which also qualifies travelers for TSA Pre-Check.
