In an attempt to provide travelers the option of taking less luggage on their tip while promoting more sustainable tourism, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Sumitomo Corporation have launched a trial of their “Any Wear, Anywhere” clothing sharing service available to foreign tourists and business travelers booked on JAL-operated flights.

The concept of the clothing-sharing service is to create an environment where travelers can use local options for all aspects of their visit that includes accommodations, food, and now the addition of clothes-sharing. Items for rent come from excess stock apparel and pre-owned clothing in an effort to promote the concept of a circular economy.

Sumitomo Corporation will be responsible for developing the reservation system along with the procurement, laundering, and delivery of clothes. Japan Airlines role is to monitor the changes in the weight of passengers’ check-in bags along with the reduction effect of carbon dioxide emissions due to the reduced airplane weight.

The trial period will run from July 5, 2023 to August 31, 2024.

Travelers with confirmed flights wishing to use the clothing service can visit Japan Airlines “Any Wear, Anywhere” reservation site to select the clothing set best fitting the season and purpose of their visit and make a payment. Information is provided on where travelers will pick up their rental clothing. Reservations must be made at least one month in advance.

Under ‘JAL Vision 2030,’ which targets the year 2030, the JAL Group is working to create a "safe and secure society" and a "sustainable future" with ESG as the core of its management strategy. The JAL Group's ESG strategy is to "solve social issues and create sustainable flows of people, and sales and distribution channels."

Starting with this trial, both companies will continue to explore joint efforts that meet customer needs and generate environmental value.
