The mayor of Maui announced the phased reopening of West
Maui accommodations would continue on November 1 with the reopening of West
Maui north of Lahaina, from Kahana to Kaanapali.
Maui Mayor Richard Bissen told the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA)
that he worked with an advisory team, the Red Cross and other partners to understand
community feedback following the first phase of reopening in West Maui, which
began on October 8.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green and Mayor Bissen stated that all
members of the Maui community displaced by the wildfire would still have
sufficient housing, even as accommodations reopen to domestic and international
travelers.
To ensure that returning visitors are respectful to the area
and the residents impacted by the wildfires, the HTA launched new videos
featuring a diverse cross-section of locals that highlight mindful visitation
tips.
In addition, the HTA advises travelers to check with
individual accommodations, activities and businesses in West Maui for their availability
and hours of operation. Officials said the returning tourists will help sustain
jobs, keep businesses open and support the community.
In addition, the local government created informational
flyers and signage with tips for respectful, compassionate and responsible
travel to support the community’s healing.
As the reopening of West Maui sparked an argument about
tourism and when to reopen the area to travelers, a recent report found that experts
believe demand
and cost will soon come into better alignment in Hawaii, making it far more
affordable to visit.
