Dominica Travel Guide

Dominica is a tropical paradise. It is characterized by lush rainforests that are home to a wide variety of wildlife and diverse flora. It also has some of the most picturesque mountains and beaches in the Caribbean.

Whether you're looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure or a relaxing stay, Dominica has something for everyone.

Since activities on this island are fairly spread out, we highly recommend you travel by car or taxi. We found good car rentals and taxis in downtown Roseau and Domica's two airports.

The public transportation system is made up of private minibusses. In our experience, these are easy to flag down and are also an affordable way to get around.

National Languages

English is the principal language of the island, even though many locals speak Dominican Creole. The indigenous Kalinago language is also spoken by the Kalinago people, who are the descendants of the original inhabitants of Dominica.

Climate And Weather

The climate in Dominica is classified as tropical maritime. The Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the northeasterly trade winds are the main contributors to this climate. Thanks to its mountainous terrain, there are several microclimates.

Rainfall is distributed evenly throughout the year. The wet season (May to November) receives slightly more than the dry season (December to April). The average rainfall is around 1,900 mm annually along the coastline and 5,000 mm inland.

Dominica’s temperature is generally warm and humid at 25°C (77°F) around the year. Temperatures vary slightly between the coastal areas and the higher-altitude mountainous areas.

When To Visit Dominica

The best time to visit Dominica is February-April. This is the dry season with mild temperatures and minimal rainfall.

But, if you want to avoid crowds, especially in the main tourist attractions, we recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons of May-June and October-November. During these months, we found prices to be more affordable and the weather still suitable for outdoor activities like hiking. However, it can be a bit more humid, and there’s a higher chance of rainfall.

We highly recommend that you pack a mix of both light and heavy clothing, regardless of the season you plan to visit. You never know when to encounter a thunderstorm or light shower.
