If you are heading to Mexico, you are probably already dusting off your sombrero and getting ready for a good time.

But did you know that Mexico also offers a variety of outdoor activities and historical archaeology? To get the best taste of this country's offers, we have prepared a list of the must-do activities for your next trip to Mexico.

Cycle In Mexico City

Mexico City’s main streets become a car-free zone every Sunday, making it the best place to enjoy the city on a bicycle.

There are plenty of options for low-cost bike rentals and you have a variety of beautiful areas to explore. We love exploring the neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa, where tree-lined avenues will guide the way.

Feel free to grab a map and plan your way around the capital. There is so much art, culture, and unique culinary tourism to enjoy, whether on foot or bicycle.

Learn The Salsa

Salsa is an infectious dance you will want to learn while visiting Mexico. Luckily, you can join the public lessons in Mexico City that happen in the Plaza Ciudadela every Saturday.

If that sounds too daunting, we recommend visiting one of the clubs or dance schools in the capital to get the hang of it first.

Snorkel With Sea Turtles

Akumal beach provides you with the fantastic opportunity to swim with sea turtles. The shallow water is home to various sea turtles and you can find snorkel gear and life jackets to rent at the beach.

You can either snorkel alone or with a guide. Both options are enjoyable and safe, as there are lifeguards on patrol.

Visit A Mezcal Distillery

Mezcal is the smoky artisanal brother of tequila.

Because of its unique flavor, we highly recommend visiting one of the small artisanal distillers in Mexico City to learn about this drink and experience a tasting.

During the tasting, you will see how the agave is cooked in volcanic pits. This drink is served with a slice of orange sprinkled with agave worm salt and chili.

Drinks, spice, and volcanoes make this ultimate must-do in Mexico.

Dive In The Cenotes

Yucatan is a swimming hotspot where you can enjoy swimming in the Cenotes, a series of underground lakes scattered around the peninsula.

These lakes are created by a collapse of limestone, which gives way to crystal clear pools.

There are larger, more popular lakes and smaller ones, but all are equally beautiful, and the experience is unique to this part of the world.

The water is rich in minerals, and the Mayans believed this was a portal to speak to the gods. We found that this experience still has that ambiance to this day.

Trace Frida Kahlo’s Steps At The Blue House

The Blue House is the famous artist Frida Kahlo’s place of birth and also where she spent her last days.

The house is preserved exactly as she left it and offers a glimpse into her life and legacy, down to her short bed and prosthetic leg.

This experience provides a unique opportunity to connect the emotion in her art to her residence, all connected through her love for Mexico and its people.

Hike Up A Volcano

If you want to appeal to your inner explorer, why not use the opportunity to hike up a dormant volcano?

The Iztaccihuatl volcano, also known as the “Sleeping Woman” offers a great option for hikers to enjoy a day trip up the mountain.

Your ascend will be rewarded with spectacular views over Mexico Valley, but unfortunately, you won’t make it to the top in one day.

There are more elaborate trips for experienced hikers, but these extend over a couple of days, and the high altitude means it is not for the faint of the heart.

Explore The Ruins At Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a UNESCO world heritage site and used to be one of the great cities in Central America,

Today, this site is home to Mayan ruins and one of the most popular sites to observe decades of excavations and impressive archaeology, all surrounded by a forest.

Expect to see quite a few people during the high season, as this site welcomes more than a million visitors per year. We highly recommend taking a guided tour of the El Castillo pyramid, one of the top attractions.

Gaze At Pink Waters At Las Colorados

Las Colorados is home to the “pink lakes”, a natural phenomenon where the sea water takes on a bright pink hue. This results from salt production, which the area is used for. The saline content causes red algae, plankton, and shrimp to tint the water.

You need a car to access this area, and you can walk along the shores for breathtaking views. No swimming is allowed though.
